The Calorie

WHAT THE HECK ARE CALORIES, LET ALONE IN AND OUT?

To keep it simple we are going to use the definition a calorie is unit of energy.  Therefore, we have food energy as calories but also have exercise energy as calories.

WHAT ARE "CALORIES IN"?

"Calories in" are all the things you put into your body.  This includes all foods and beverages.

WHAT ARE "CALORIES OUT"?

"Calories out" are the calories used for you to live, work, and physical activity.  To live, they are body functions such as breathing, heart beat, swallowing, digesting etc.  To work, they are typing, walking to get coffee, photocopying, reading etc.  And physical activity includes cleaning the house, sweeping, walking the dog, running, going to the gym etc.

WHY DO CALORIES MATTER?

Calories matter because they are the units of energy we get from food but also the energy we use to live.  Therefore, in order for us to gain or lose weight we have to know how many calories we consume but also how many we use to live.

With that being said, there are only 3 scenarios that your body can be doing:

gaining, losing or maintaining
